Isabel Esther Blomberg 85, of Indianapolis, passed away on July 29, 2006 after a long illness. Isabel E. Blomberg spent 30 years as a teacher and administrator in the Metropolitan School District of Washington Township. She joined the staff in 1959 as an elementary teacher at John Strange School. In 1965 she became the elementary curriculum coordinator, a position she held until being appointed director of curriculum in 1983 with responsibilities ranging from kindergarten through grade 12. Mrs. Blomberg retired from the northeast side school district in 1989. Mrs. Blomberg was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on Christmas Day, 1920. She already had four older brothers and sisters; Elinor, Frank, Gertrude, and Mildred. Another sibling, Roy, was born later. She attended elementary, junior high, and high schools in Milwaukee and became valedictorian of her high school class in 1938. Mrs. Blomberg graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1942, at which time she was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa honorary society. Following her graduation she attended Yale University to pursue studies in speech and drama. Her first teaching position was interrupted by World War II, during which time she was employed as a civilian instructor of radiotelegraph procedure for the Army Air Force. Her subsequent teaching experience included elementary, junior high, middle school, high school, and college levels. She received her Master's Degree from Butler University in 1964 and taught evening classes there while employed as an administrator with the Metropolitan School District of Washington Township. In 1988 she was awarded an honorary Doctor's Degree from Butler University. She was a member of several professional organizations, including Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, Zeta Phi Eta, Drama Club, International Reading Association, Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, Indiana Association for Gifted Children, and the Marion County Curriculum Association. She authored two curriculum books and several articles for professional journals, and was well known throughout the state as a curriculum and testing consultant. She is survived by her husband, Kenneth H. Blomberg; three children, Ronald, Bruce, and Karen; two grandchildren, Jon and Bryn; her daughter-in-law, Jocelyn; and two great grandchildren. She and her husband celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary in 2005. Mrs. Blomberg was a member of Second Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis. A memorial service will be held at Second Presbyterian Church on Thursday, August 3, at 1:00 p.m., with visitation offered prior to the service in the Parlor beginning at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, commemorative contributions may be made payable to the Second Presbyterian Endowment Fund, 7700 North Meridian Street, Indianapolis, IN 46260.
